Asbestos is a dangerous substance when it is disturbed, because it releases the fibres into the air. It can cause many health problems, including Mesothelioma and lung cancer. There are things you should know so that you can avoid asbestos exposure.
Don’t Touch Insulation
Asbestos was used in insulation in older homes, especially those built before the 1980s. That’s why it's a good idea to not handle any loose insulation. If the insulation contains asbestos, then it is dangerous when it is loose or disturbed. If you see any loose insulation, you should have it tested by a certified asbestos professional.
Have a Mechanic Change Your Brakes
Older brakes were made with asbestos. If you have a much older model car, then you should have a professional change your brakes to new brakes. The brakes on newer cars aren’t made with asbestos containing materials. Never change older brakes yourself, because you may inadvertently be exposed to asbestos.
Check Your Pipes
The pipes in older homes also contain asbestos. When the wrapping is damaged, it becomes dangerous. If you see any damaged pipe wrapping, it’s time to call an asbestos professional.
Natural Deposits
Asbestos is a mineral that occurs naturally in the earth’s crust. It occurs in many parts of the world, including Ireland. Living near these natural deposits increases your risk of mesothelioma, so it is best to avoid them. Hilly or mountainous regions and those that contain large amounts of limestone can contain natural asbestos deposits.
