Its 2016 & Asbestos Exposure Remains a Serious Health Risk

11 Jan 2016

Asbestos is a mineral that was once used for insulating materials, and was considered to be strong, heat resistant, and very effective. This why many industrial and commercial buildings have used them in their construction for decades. However, this was before it was banned for its toxicity and potentially fatal effects. Even in 2016, it is still a concern for those who live and work in older buildings and who plan to renovate structures built before 2000.

In Ireland, the construction industry is home to many safety and health concerns, and asbestos exposure is one of the biggest concerns today. It is still known to the largest killer in the workplace, and can take years for any symptoms to appear. And the greatest danger exists when the asbestos fibres are released and become airborne, then being inhaled by those in the area.

When a person breathes in these fibres, they can cause direct damage to the lungs and lead to fatal disease, like lung cancer. And with these dangers still present, caution is absolutely important for contractors and all involved with working in construction. If you are responsible for the maintenance or repair of a residential project, or a commercial or industrial property, you must follow regulations concerning this hazard.

First, it must be determined if asbestos is present. This can be done through a qualified asbestos survey by professionals to determine the risks in the areas you will be working. It is the best to assume that older building materials contain asbestos, unless it has been renovated in recent years, but it is always safest to have a survey completed. If there is asbestos uncovered at your site, it is vital that you take the necessary steps to keep it contained. All work must be stopped, the cleared of all workers, then contact a licensed professional. Never take any chances when it comes to the health and safety of workers on a construction site.
