Ergonomic Assessment
Ergonomics is a science concerned with the ‘fit’ between people and their work. It puts people first, taking account of their capabilities and limitations. Ergonomics aims to make sure that tasks, equipment, information and the environment suit each worker. Applying ergonomics to the workplace:
• Improves productivity and performance
• Improves quality of work
• Reduces potential for injury and absenteeism,
• Cuts compensation claims
• Saves costly mistakes in equipment purchase
Failure to observe ergonomic principles may have serious repercussions, not only for individuals, but whole organisations. Complaints of upper limb disorders, repetitive strain injuries, carpel tunnel syndrome, aches of the shoulder, back and wrists are all becoming too common in the workplace and which can be attributed to poor ergonomic principles. Many well-known accidents might have been prevented if ergonomics had been considered in designing the jobs people did and the systems within which they worked.
